Dauphin County contains a total land area of 558 square miles and according to the 2000 census contained a population of 251,798 persons.  This is a net increase of 13,374 persons (5.61%) from the 1990 census of 238,424 persons.  The United States Census Bureau estimates the population of Dauphin County in 2004 to be 253,282, which continues the previous decade’s trend.
